The 4th of July falls on a Monday this year, which probably means three or even four nights of loud, festive fireworks. Pima Animal Care Center would like to share some tips on how pet owners can ensure their pet stays safe while still being easily identifiable if they go outside.

Register pets using Petco Love Lost. Petco Love Lost is a national searchable database that uses patented facial recognition technology to make finding lost pets easier and faster. Uploaded photos of a missing dog or cat are immediately scanned to determine if the lost animal is at a participating shelter or with a neighbor in the community.

Update the pet’s microchip information to ensure it matches the current contact information. If your pet does not have a microchip, you can try to get them one before the holiday weekend and register them here. Find low cost microchipping services at nokillpimacounty.org.

Make sure pets wear a properly fitting collar with up-to-date contact information on the collar or tag attached. Many local and online retailers offer affordable collars.

Inspect the windows and doors in your home, as well as all the fences and gates in your yard. The easiest way to keep your pet safe over the holiday weekend is to make sure they don’t have an easy escape route. Make sure all windows and doors close tightly and cannot be opened to keep your pet inside. If your pet has access to a yard, make sure all fences and gates are secure and remove any objects your pet might use to climb over the fence.

Remember that adopting all – or even just one – of these measures will help keep pets safe and prevent the harrowing process of losing a beloved family member. If your pet goes missing or you find a lost pet, you can file reports for lost and found pets at www.pima.gov/PACClostandfound.
