Valley high school students trained to work in animal care

The Western Maricopa Education Center runs programs in the valley to train high school students and get them into the pet care industry.

GLENDALE, Ariz. — During the pandemic, millions of pets have been adopted across the country. With more pets in homes, this is putting pressure on the already stressed animal care industry.

There is a shortage of veterinarians and the need for these specialized animal groomers is also hitting Arizona.

To help alleviate shortages, the Western Maricopa Education Center runs programs in the valley to quickly train high school students and get them into the pet care industry.

Lisa Flemming, veterinary science instructor at West-MEC Southwest Campus, mentors high school students in their veterinary science program.

The classroom is in a lab and offers hands-on experiments. Animals are brought in to be vaccinated, microchipped, neutered, neutered and more.

Once students complete the program, they can join the workforce and provide relief to animal care practices that need skilled employees.

The school also teams up with local shelters and rescues to help teach students. Thanks to this partnership, the animals are healthy and re-adopted into the community.

Apps are available for high school students who want to learn more about veterinary science in the upcoming school year.
