Consumer research has revealed that people today want the same product features for their pets that they want for themselves: products that are health and wellness focused, sustainable and locally sourced. .
With a new product announced over the weekend, local dog and cat owners have just that in a new line of pet treats.
Jen Barney, three-time Food Network Bakery Champion, owner of Meringue Bakery, and veterinarian Nicole Azene, co-owner of Onalaska Animal Hospital, have teamed up to create the new line. Treats include Pup Cakes, Cat Snack Attacks, Dog Gone Biscuits, and Happy Birthday Cakes. Offers may expand in the future.
Barney created and developed the treats with ingredient advice from Azene. The treats contain wholesome, all-natural ingredients such as bananas, carrot juice, salmon oil and, of course, catnip for the felines. They are available exclusively at Meringue Bakery in downtown La Crosse and the Onalaska Veterinary Hospital.

“I wanted to do something like this for a long time. I had come up with ideas for treats that would be healthy and delicious that I could give away to local animal lovers like me,” Barney said. “When Dr. Nicole reached out, offering her expertise as part of the deal, I knew the time had come.”
Barney has taken every step to ensure the treats are safe and nutritious, including state lab testing and licensing. With Azene, she also tested the products with dogs and cats, the rave reviews of which were evident at the speed of consumption.
Azene approached Barney while the Onalaska Animal Hospital was under construction, seeking to provide her patients with locally made products with a twist that would turn healthy snacks into real treats.
“Jen and Meringue were a natural choice. She was already producing first-class local products for humans,” Azene said. “We wanted his winning touch and culinary prowess on pet treats, and we got it.”
