Berkeley Animal Center Receives $50,000 Grant for PetSmart Charities

Specifically, this grant will allow the animal center to offer more adoptable animals and off-site events for the public and help cover the cost of spaying, neutering, vaccinations, deworming and testing of each animal.

BERKELEY COUNTY, SC – Berkeley Animal Center has received a $50,000 grant from PetSmart Charities® to help prepare more Berkeley County shelter animals for adoption.

Some five million pets end up in shelters in the United States each year. With this grant, the organization says it will be able to better fund adoption readiness procedures and continue to meet the animal center’s primary goal of proper animal care.

“We are extremely grateful for this grant and the support to fund the growing crucial spaying/sterilization surgeries. Our shelter has seen an increase in the reception of animals since its opening in 2017. We have gone from welcoming 2,000 animals to 6,200 animals; and we expect that number to continue to grow,” said Berkeley County Parks and Recreation Director Heather McDowell.

“This money will help our shelter fight overcrowding. Berkeley County continues to seek efforts to meet the needs of Berkeley County animals. Contributions like this not only help the animal shelter, but the entire county,” she continued.

Specifically, this grant will allow the animal center to offer more adoptable animals and off-site events for the public and help cover the cost of spaying, neutering, vaccinations, deworming and testing of each animal.

As the county’s only animal shelter, Berkeley Animal Center’s mission is to reduce the number of homeless cats and dogs throughout the county. The shelter welcomes more than 6,000 stray, abandoned and lost animals each year.
