$260,000 grant from PetSmart Charities Of Canada brings Peterborough animal care center closer to completion

The SPCA and Humane Society of Ontario and the Peterborough Humane Society (PHS) have received a boost from PetSmart Charities of Canada for the new Peterborough Animal Care Center in the form of a $260,000 grant.

This unique partnership will bring together three facilities under one roof. The 24,000 square foot Peterborough Animal Care Center will house the Peterborough Humane Society’s Adoption and Education Center and Regional Spaying Clinic, as well as the Ontario SPCA’s Provincial Canine Rehabilitation Center. Construction is well underway and is expected to be complete by the end of 2022. Fundraising is underway and support from PetSmart Charites of Canada brings PHS and the Ontario SPCA even closer to their goal.

$75,000 of the grant will go to the Ontario SPCA Provincial Canine Rehabilitation Centre. The dog rehabilitation center will be custom built to help dogs that need more support and individualized care than an animal center can provide. It will contain a number of unique features including a real family lounge to help dogs practice living in a family environment.

“We are grateful to receive this grant from PetSmart Charities of Canada to help bring the Provincial Canine Rehabilitation Center to life,” said Dr. Stephanie Black, Chief Veterinarian of the SPCA and Humane Society of Ontario. “Once completed, this center will fill a critical and important gap in current services by meeting the individualized needs of the most difficult-to-adopt dogs.”

PHS will use the grant funds to purchase the medical equipment required for the regional high-volume sterilization clinic within the new center. The Spay/Neuter Clinic (which will serve the public as well as other animal rescue organizations) will perform up to 25 surgeries a day, helping 5,000 pets and their families each year.

“PetSmart Charities of Canada has been a phenomenal partner on this journey to the new center,” shares Shawn Morey, CEO of the Peterborough Humane Society. “Their support brings us that much closer to being able to raise the bar for animal care in our community and beyond.”

PetSmart Charities of Canada has cumulatively contributed more than $421,000 to the innovative new pet care facility located at 1999 Technology Dr. in Peterborough.

“We recognize the need for accessible health and welfare services for pets, which is why we are delighted that the new Animal Care Center will help bring these services to the Peterborough community,” said Dani LaGiglia, Senior Community Grants Manager at PetSmart Charities of Canada. . “Not only will the center help more animals find homes, it will also help more animals get the care they need for their health and well-being.”
